CVE-2026-35421 is a heap-based buffer overflow vulnerability in the Windows Graphics Device Interface (GDI). The flaw is triggered when GDI parses specially crafted Enhanced Metafile (EMF) records and fails to properly validate record data size against heap buffer boundaries during rendering. This can result in an out-of-bounds write that corrupts adjacent heap memory. The vulnerability is reachable through applications that rely on Windows GDI for rendering, including Microsoft Paint, when a user opens or otherwise processes a malicious EMF image. Successful exploitation can lead to arbitrary code execution in the security context of the user who processed the file.
