CVE-2026-40164 is an algorithmic complexity denial-of-service vulnerability in jq, a command-line JSON processor. The issue stems from jq using MurmurHash3 with a hardcoded, publicly known seed for JSON object hash table operations. Because the seed is deterministic and visible, an attacker can precompute large sets of JSON object keys that all collide into the same hash bucket. When jq processes a crafted JSON object containing many such colliding keys, hash table operations degrade from expected constant time to linear time per lookup, causing overall processing of the object to become quadratic in complexity. As a result, even relatively small malicious JSON inputs can trigger severe CPU exhaustion and prolonged processing delays in workflows that parse untrusted JSON.
