CVE-2026-40342 affects Firebird, the open-source relational database management system. In Firebird versions prior to 5.0.4, 4.0.7, and 3.0.14, the external engine plugin loader constructs a filesystem path by concatenating a user-controlled ENGINE name without filtering path separators or '..' traversal sequences. An authenticated user with CREATE FUNCTION privileges can supply a crafted ENGINE value that traverses outside the intended plugin directory and causes Firebird to load an arbitrary shared library from elsewhere on the filesystem. Because the shared library's initialization code is executed immediately when the library is loaded, and this occurs before Firebird completes validation of the module, successful exploitation results in execution of attacker-chosen code in the context of the Firebird server process.
