CVE-2026-40413 is a denial-of-service vulnerability in the Windows TCP/IP stack caused by a NULL pointer dereference. An unauthorized attacker on an adjacent network can trigger the flaw without user interaction, causing the affected system's networking component to crash or otherwise become unavailable. Microsoft indicates the issue is constrained to the same network segment, such as the same switch or virtual network, rather than being exploitable across routed networks or a WAN. The vulnerability has a changed scope in some deployment scenarios, including Hyper-V environments where a low-privilege guest may be able to cross the guest boundary and induce denial of service on the host environment.
