NLnet Labs Unbound versions 1.16.2 through 1.25.0 improperly handle cached delegation NS resource records in a ghost domain names attack variant. A client NS query can cause the resolver to replace an expired parent-side referral NS RRset in cache with the child zone apex NS RRset, extending the effective ghost-domain window by up to the configured cache-max-ttl value. When harden-referral-path is enabled, Unbound performs the relevant NS query implicitly. Unbound 1.25.1 prevents extension of TTLs for parent NS records irrespective of record trust.
