CVE-2026-41992 is an out-of-bounds read in GNU gzip's LZH decompression logic. A global array shared by the LZ77, LZW, and LZH decoders is not reinitialized between files handled during one gzip invocation. Processing a crafted LZW input before a crafted LZH input can leave stale array state that the LZH decoder follows, causing reads beyond the allocated global buffer.

A GNU gzip LZH-decompression flaw in which shared global state is not reinitialized between decompression formats. A crafted LZW file followed by a crafted LZH file in one gzip invocation can cause stale state to produce an out-of-bounds read.
A network-reachable, low-complexity vulnerability affecting gzip on Rocky Linux 8, with CVSS v3 confidentiality impact rated High. The referenced Rocky Linux advisory patch was published on 2026-09-10; no known exploits are available according to the content.
A gzip vulnerability addressed by AlmaLinux 8 advisory RHSA-2026:65998. Based on the listed CVSS v3 vector, it can expose high-impact confidentiality information remotely without privileges or user interaction.
A gzip vulnerability addressed by Ubuntu Security Notice USN-8733-1, affecting Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. The supplied CVSS vectors indicate an unauthenticated, low-complexity confidentiality-impact issue, but no technical root cause is provided.
