CVE-2026-42198 is a client-side denial-of-service vulnerability in the PostgreSQL JDBC driver (pgjdbc) affecting versions 42.2.0 through 42.7.10. During SCRAM-SHA-256 authentication, a malicious PostgreSQL server can supply an excessively large SCRAM iteration count. pgjdbc passes this value to PBKDF2 without an effective upper limit, causing the client to consume CPU for an unbounded period before authentication fails. The issue is exacerbated because expiration of loginTimeout can return control to the caller while the worker thread continues the PBKDF2 computation.
