CVE-2026-42296 is an authorization flaw in Argo Workflows that affects deployments using workflowTemplateRef with templateReferencing set to Strict or Secure. In affected versions, Argo merged user-supplied WorkflowSpec fields with the referenced WorkflowTemplate and gave attacker-controlled values precedence for security-sensitive fields that were not properly restricted. As a result, a user with permission to create Workflows could bypass the intended template enforcement boundary and override settings such as host networking, service account selection, pod security context, service account token mounting, and tolerations. The issue is described as an incomplete fix for an earlier related vulnerability, where validation blocked only podSpecPatch while leaving other dangerous WorkflowSpec fields unchecked. Additional related fixes also addressed the same privilege-escalation class through nested ArtifactGC fields applied to the artifact garbage-collection pod. The vulnerability affects Argo Workflows versions prior to 3.7.14 and 4.0.5.

An authorization bypass vulnerability in Argo Workflows that allows a user with create Workflow permission to bypass templateReferencing: Strict and gain access to restricted Kubernetes workload settings such as host networking, service account switching, pod security context overrides, tolerations for control-plane scheduling, and service account token mounting.
An incorrect authorization vulnerability in Argo Workflows caused by an incomplete prior fix, allowing authenticated users with workflow creation privileges to bypass template enforcement in Strict/Secure templateReferencing modes and escalate privileges in Kubernetes by overriding security-sensitive WorkflowSpec fields.
