Archive::Tar versions before 3.08 for Perl improperly handles symbolic links during tar extraction. Its special-file extraction routine passes an archive-controlled link target directly to the operating system symlink creation primitive without rejecting absolute paths or parent-directory traversal segments. Secure-extraction validation applied to regular files does not protect symlink targets. A crafted archive can therefore create a symlink within the extraction tree that resolves to a location outside that tree.
