CVE-2026-42944 is a heap-based buffer overflow vulnerability in NLnet Labs Unbound affecting versions 1.14.0 through 1.25.0 inclusive. The flaw occurs while encoding reply packets that contain multiple EDNS options related to NSID, DNS Cookie, and EDNS Padding. Exploitation requires the relevant features to be enabled, specifically NSID, answer-cookie, and pad-responses, with pad-responses enabled by default. An attacker able to send queries to the resolver can supply multiple instances of these EDNS options in a query. Due to a flaw in EDNS field size calculation that truncates the correct value, combined with insufficient handling of duplicate options, the encoder can write past the allocated heap buffer while constructing the response. This results in a heap overflow write of Unbound-controlled data and can terminate the resolver process.
