CVE-2026-42960 is a cache poisoning vulnerability in NLnet Labs Unbound affecting versions up to and including 1.25.0. While following delegation, Unbound can improperly accept and cache promiscuous RRSets placed in the authority section when those records are accompanied by related address records in the additional section. An attacker able to inject such data into a DNS reply can cause Unbound to cache records beyond the intended authority NS context, including other RRSet types such as MX, if the authority RRSet is considered sufficiently trustworthy at that stage of processing, such as in-zone data for the delegation point. The flaw stems from insufficient restriction of additional-section address records to those explicitly relevant to authority NS records, enabling poisoning of the resolver cache through spoofed or fragmentation-assisted responses. The issue is described as a complementary fix to CVE-2025-11411.
