CVE-2026-42985 is a critical remote code execution vulnerability in Microsoft Remote Desktop Client. The flaw is described as a heap-based memory corruption condition and specifically mapped to CWE-416 use-after-free. Exploitation occurs when a victim uses a vulnerable Remote Desktop Client to connect to an attacker-controlled or otherwise malicious Remote Desktop server. During the RDP session setup or related processing, the malicious server can trigger the memory safety flaw in the client, leading to heap corruption and arbitrary code execution on the victim system. Microsoft assigned the vulnerability a CVSS v3.1 base score of 8.8 and assessed exploitation as more likely.
