A vulnerability in the Linux kernel XFS filesystem affects attribute leaf block handling during insertion of extended attributes. In the XFS attribute leaf code, freemap metadata was not fully adjusted as the leaf entries array grew, allowing tracked free space to overlap the entries array. This inconsistency could cause the computed name area to begin below the end of the entries array, violating internal leaf block invariants and triggering an assertion in the freemap adjustment path. The issue was observed in xfs_attr3_leaf_add_work within fs/xfs/libxfs/xfs_attr_leaf.c during repeated local extended attribute operations that create a specific leaf layout. The flaw has existed since Linux 2.6.12. The upstream fix adjusts all freemap entries to ensure they cannot collide with the entries array, and depends on earlier XFS fixes related to freemap size underflow handling and zero-length freemap entry normalization.
