CVE-2026-43237 is a memory-safety flaw in the Linux kernel DRM amdgpu driver involving fence lifecycle management during virtual address update operations. The vulnerable logic in amdgpu_gem_va_ioctl selected a fence too early and did not manage its reference correctly while handling last-update fence state and VM timeline synchronization. As a result, stale or already freed dma_fence objects could be reused during GPU timeline updates. The bug manifested as refcount underflows and use-after-free conditions on dma_fence, with failures observed during signaling and timeline processing. The fix refactored the code so last-update fence management occurs in amdgpu_gem_va_update_vm, added timeline point checks for conditional fence replacement or addition, and ensured the fence is selected only after VA mapping work completes, with references acquired and released in a balanced manner.
