CVE-2026-44249 is a high-severity improper access control vulnerability in Netty's netty-handler module that affects IPv6 subnet-based filtering implemented through io.netty.handler.ipfilter.IpSubnetFilterRule. In vulnerable versions prior to 4.1.135.Final and 4.2.15.Final, the IPv6 comparison logic in IpSubnetFilterRule.compareTo() contains an incorrect masking operation that applies the network address where the subnet mask should be used, causing subnet membership checks to produce incorrect results. Supporting analysis also identifies a second IPv6-specific logic flaw in the conversion of IPv6 address bytes to BigInteger, where signed interpretation can mis-handle addresses in the upper IPv6 space. Either flaw can cause IPv6 subnet rules to evaluate incorrectly, allowing addresses outside the intended subnet policy to be treated as permitted. The issue affects deployments that rely on Netty subnet filter rules for IPv6 source-based access control.
