CVE-2026-44390 is a denial-of-service vulnerability in NLnet Labs Unbound affecting versions up to and including 1.25.0. The flaw occurs when Unbound processes replies containing very large RRsets for which it must perform DNS name compression before sending downstream responses. In a specific edge case, records in the RRset do not share any suffix above the root, causing compression tree lookups to fail and execution to follow a code path that does not increment the compression counter introduced in 1.21.1. Because the counter is not updated for those operations, the intended compression limit is bypassed and name compression becomes effectively unbounded. An attacker can trigger excessive CPU consumption by causing Unbound to resolve specially crafted malicious zone contents or by supplying malicious upstream responses with very large RRsets, resulting in prolonged processing during reply construction.
