CVE-2026-44690 is a cache poisoning vulnerability in NLnet Labs Unbound affecting versions 1.7.0 through 1.25.1. The flaw arises from insufficient validation of the DNSSEC RRSIG Labels field together with premature cache writes during RFC 8198 aggressive NSEC processing. Under these conditions, Unbound can incorrectly accept and cache maliciously crafted insecure wildcard delegation data derived from a zone controlled by an attacker. A malicious actor who controls a single delegated domain beneath an NSEC-signed parent can abuse fraudulent wildcard DS records with fewer labels than expected and an unknown algorithm to cause nonexistent sibling delegations covered by the parent NSEC chain to be treated as insecurely existing. This enables cross-zone poisoning of arbitrary sibling zones under the same parent domain.
