CVE-2026-44945 is a privilege escalation vulnerability in Rancher’s impersonation middleware, specifically in the authentication request handling logic implemented in pkg/auth/requests/impersonate.go. The flaw allows an authenticated Rancher user assigned only the default user global role to improperly leverage impersonation behavior and escalate privileges to full administrative access within the Rancher control plane. Because Rancher centrally manages downstream Kubernetes clusters, compromise of the control plane can transitively extend administrative control to all managed downstream clusters. The issue affects Rancher versions 2.11.0 before 2.11.16, 2.12.0 before 2.12.12, 2.13.0 before 2.13.8, and 2.14.0 before 2.14.2.
