CVE-2026-46340 is an uncontrolled resource consumption vulnerability in Netty's SCTP transport module, io.netty:netty-transport-sctp. In affected versions prior to 4.1.135.Final and 4.2.15.Final, SCTP message reassembly for non-complete fragments repeatedly wraps the existing fragment accumulator together with each newly received fragment into a new CompositeByteBuf. This creates an unboundedly deep chain of nested composite buffers for a single stream. After many fragments, buffer operations such as readableBytes() and getBytes() must traverse the nested structure recursively, while each layer also retains references and component metadata. The implementation imposes no effective bound on fragment count, total accumulated bytes, or the number of stream identifiers tracked concurrently, allowing each stream to maintain its own growing reassembly state. A remote peer can exploit this by sending very small fragmented SCTP DATA chunks while never setting the complete flag, causing indefinite growth in memory usage and processing overhead during reassembly.
