CVE-2026-48294 is a UXSS-class cross-origin data disclosure vulnerability affecting Adobe Acrobat PDF Extension for Chrome before the fixed 26.5.2.3 release. The issue stems from missing origin and sender validation in the extension’s internal messaging and exposed internal resources, allowing an attacker-controlled web page to embed an internal extension page and send commands that are treated as trusted extension messages. This enables unauthorized writes to the extension’s local storage, including activation of Adobe’s dormant Hermes integration component used to interact with WhatsApp Web. Once enabled, the extension can perform privileged DOM operations against a WhatsApp Web tab and expose rendered cross-origin content, including chat lists, contact names, messages, profile information, and other session-associated data. The vulnerability has been described as a chain of flaws collectively dubbed HermeticReader.
