CVE-2026-49426 is a FreeBSD ptrace/audit vulnerability in which audit records for system calls executed via ptrace(PT_SC_REMOTE) are generated with the wrong result status. According to the provided advisory context, when auditing a system call executed through PT_SC_REMOTE, the kernel passed the return value of an internal setup function to AUDIT_SYSCALL_EXIT() instead of the actual return value of the remotely executed system call. As a result, audit(4) can record a remotely executed syscall as successful even when the syscall itself failed. The issue affects the correctness and trustworthiness of audit logging for ptrace-mediated remote syscall execution rather than the execution semantics of the syscall itself.
