CVE-2026-50252 is a cache poisoning weakness in NLnet Labs Unbound from 1.4.22 through 1.25.1. Unbound relies in part on randomized UDP source ports to add entropy to outbound DNS transactions. When the default SO_REUSEPORT-based configuration is enabled, Unbound creates worker-thread-specific, disjoint subsets of the available UDP source port space at startup and assigns outbound queries for a given request exclusively from the subset associated with the handling worker thread. Because the kernel’s SO_REUSEPORT load-balancing behavior deterministically maps incoming queries, for a fixed client source IP address and source UDP port pattern, to a particular worker socket, an attacker can learn the relationship between incoming client-side source ports and Unbound worker threads. Once this mapping is known, the source port observed in outbound resolver traffic reveals which worker handled the request and therefore which reduced source-port subset is in use. This undermines the intended secrecy of source-port randomization and lowers the effective entropy available to defend against DNS cache poisoning.
