CVE-2026-50256 is a stack-based buffer overflow in X.Org X server and Xwayland font alias resolution. The X server allocated font-alias stack buffers using a 256-byte maximum-name constant, whereas libXfont2 permits resolved alias target names of up to 1024 bytes. In affected code paths, including doListFontsAndAliases() and doListFontsWithInfo(), a resolved alias name can be copied into the undersized buffer without adequate bounds validation. Alias names from 257 through 1023 bytes can therefore overwrite adjacent stack memory. Affected releases are xorg-server before 21.1.23 and Xwayland before 24.1.12.
