CVE-2026-53583 is an improper TLS certificate hostname validation vulnerability in libgit2's OpenSSL backend. In the IP-address SubjectAltName validation branch of the certificate-verification routine, an inverted memcmp result causes matching certificate IP SubjectAltNames to be rejected and mismatched IP SubjectAltNames to be accepted. The defect affects connections to HTTPS remotes specified using IP literals. DNS SubjectAltName validation and TLS backends other than OpenSSL are not affected. libgit2 versions before 1.8.6 and 1.9.5 are affected.
