CVE-2026-53584 is a path-traversal vulnerability in libgit2 submodule handling. Before versions 1.8.6 and 1.9.5, submodule paths loaded from a repository’s .gitmodules metadata were not rejected when they contained traversal components. The affected submodule lookup and setup operations can use a crafted path that resolves outside the repository working tree, causing directory creation beyond the intended checkout location.
