CVE-2026-54526 is a policy-bypass vulnerability in Argo Workflows affecting versions prior to 3.7.15 and 4.0.6. The flaw stems from an incomplete allow-list remediation for CVE-2026-31892 in workflow/util/merge.go. The validation and sanitization routines, ValidateUserOverrides and SanitizeUserWorkflowSpec, inspect only top-level fields of WorkflowSpec via reflection. While direct PodSpecPatch handling on WorkflowSpec was previously constrained, WorkflowSpec.ArtifactGC is allow-listed as a whole, and the nested WorkflowLevelArtifactGC structure contains a PodSpecPatch field whose contents are not sanitized before being passed to util.ApplyPodSpecPatch for the artifact garbage-collection pod. As a result, a user can submit a Workflow that, under templateReferencing set to Strict or Secure, injects an arbitrary strategic merge patch into the artifact-GC pod when using a referenced WorkflowTemplate that declares an output artifact and configures artifact garbage collection on workflow completion. This defeats the intended restrictions of Strict and Secure reference modes.
