CVE-2026-54526 is an improper access-control vulnerability in Argo Workflows caused by incomplete remediation of CVE-2026-31892. In affected releases, Strict and Secure template-reference override validation allow-lists the ArtifactGC object at the top level without recursively sanitizing its nested fields. The nested PodSpecPatch value can therefore reach the artifact garbage-collection pod creation path and be applied as an arbitrary strategic merge patch. This bypasses the intended restriction preventing workflow submitters from modifying pod specifications when using referenced WorkflowTemplates.

A critical privilege escalation and security restriction bypass in Argo Workflows caused by insufficient recursive validation of nested ArtifactGC fields, allowing authenticated workflow submitters to inject podSpecPatch and serviceAccountName values that can lead to host escape and cluster-wide compromise.
A high-severity authorization/allow-list bypass in Argo Workflows that permits users in Strict or Secure template-reference modes to inject arbitrary strategic merge patches into artifact-GC pods, potentially enabling privileged pod configuration and host-level Kubernetes access.
An Argo Workflows vulnerability in which an incomplete fix for CVE-2026-31892 allows arbitrary strategic merge patch injection into the artifact-GC pod via WorkflowSpec.ArtifactGC.PodSpecPatch, bypassing Strict/Secure template referencing protections.
