CVE-2026-54874 is an asymmetric memory-consumption vulnerability in OpenSSL DTLS handshake processing. When a DTLS peer sends records claiming to belong to a future epoch before the local endpoint has completed its own epoch transition, OpenSSL buffers those records for later processing. Vulnerable versions retain the complete DTLS read buffer, sized at approximately 16 KB, for each buffered record rather than retaining only the record bytes. Up to 100 future-epoch records may be buffered per DTLS association, allowing small forged records to produce disproportionate memory retention. OpenSSL 4.0 before 4.0.2, 3.6 before 3.6.4, 3.5 before 3.5.8, 3.4 before 3.4.7, 3.0 before 3.0.22, 1.1.1 before 1.1.1zi, and 1.0.2 before 1.0.2zr are affected. The vulnerable code is outside the OpenSSL FIPS module boundary.
