CVE-2026-55953 is a cipher-suite negotiation validation flaw in the Erlang/OTP ssl client for TLS 1.2 and earlier and DTLS. The client-side TLS handshake logic accepts the cipher suite selected in a ServerHello without verifying that it was included in the client’s ClientHello offer. The selected suite is installed without a membership check. An on-path attacker can therefore impersonate the intended server and select an unoffered anonymous key-exchange cipher suite. Because anonymous suites do not require a server certificate, this bypasses certificate-chain validation and hostname verification, including configurations using verify_peer and configured trust anchors. TLS 1.3 clients are not affected because their negotiation path validates the selected cipher suite. Affected releases are OTP 17.0 through versions preceding OTP 27.3.4.15, OTP 28.5.0.4, and OTP 29.0.4; corresponding affected ssl releases begin at 5.3.4 and precede ssl 11.2.12.11, 11.6.0.4, and 11.7.4, respectively. The status of OTP releases before 17.0 is unknown.
