CVE-2026-56391 is an out-of-bounds read in the GNU coreutils uniq utility affecting versions 9.5 through 9.11. When uniq processes crafted multibyte input with the -w (--check-chars) option, find_field() repeatedly processes a fixed input pointer rather than advancing through the character sequence. This miscalculates and inflates a character byte-length value. A subsequent memcmp operation uses that erroneous length and can read beyond the allocated input buffer.
