CVE-2026-56392 is a heap-based buffer overflow in the GNU coreutils unexpand utility affecting GNU coreutils through version 9.11. The flaw is caused by an integer overflow during buffer allocation when unexpand processes large tab stop values supplied via the -t option. The multiplication used to compute the required allocation size can wrap, resulting in an undersized heap buffer. Subsequent processing of crafted input can then write past the end of the allocated region, producing an out-of-bounds heap write. Successful triggering can crash the utility and, depending on allocator behavior and memory layout, may provide a limited heap write primitive.
