CVE-2026-5653 is a heap-based buffer overflow in the DCP-ETSI PFT protocol dissector in Wireshark, affecting versions 4.6.0 through 4.6.4 and 4.4.0 through 4.4.14. The flaw is in the Reed-Solomon forward error correction processing path during fragment reassembly. The vulnerable logic allocates a heap buffer sized to the fragment count multiplied by payload length, while the Reed-Solomon decoder operates on fixed 255-byte blocks. Under crafted conditions, including malformed DCP-ETSI PFT fragments with FEC enabled, this size mismatch can cause writes past the end of the allocated heap buffer. The issue can be triggered when Wireshark processes malformed network traffic or opens a crafted packet capture containing such traffic, resulting in a crash.
