CVE-2026-5656 is a path traversal vulnerability in Wireshark's Configuration Profile import feature affecting Wireshark 4.6.0 through 4.6.4 and 4.4.0 through 4.4.14. The flaw is caused by insufficient validation of file paths during ZIP extraction in WiresharkZipHelper::unzip(), which appends attacker-controlled archive entry names to the destination path without verifying that the resolved output path remains داخل the intended extraction directory. Because directory traversal sequences are not blocked after path resolution, a crafted ZIP archive can write files outside the profile import directory. On platforms where Wireshark automatically loads user plugins at startup, this can be leveraged to place a malicious Lua plugin in a user-controlled plugin location, leading to code execution when Wireshark is restarted. The vulnerability can also cause denial of service through application crash or unsafe file overwrite behavior during profile import.
