CVE-2026-57233 is a path traversal vulnerability in the WinGup updater component used by Notepad++ before version 8.9.7. The flaw is in the decompress logic, which concatenates untrusted ZIP entry names to the extraction destination without canonical path containment validation. By supplying a crafted archive containing traversal sequences, an attacker can cause extraction outside the intended directory and overwrite files in adjacent locations, including plugin-related DLLs. If a targeted plugin DLL is overwritten, attacker-controlled code can execute when Notepad++ subsequently loads the affected plugin.
