CVE-2026-58227 is an uncontrolled-recursion vulnerability in the Erlang/OTP ssl application’s incomplete peer certificate-chain reconstruction during TLS and DTLS handshakes. Certificate-chain processing does not detect issuer cycles or impose a maximum chain depth. A peer-provided unordered pair of mutually cross-signed certificates can cause issuer resolution to alternate indefinitely, recursively extending the call stack and certificate-chain accumulator until process resources are exhausted. Both TLS/DTLS clients and servers are affected while processing peer Certificate handshake messages. Affected releases include OTP 23.2 through versions preceding OTP 27.3.4.15, 28.5.0.4, and 29.0.4; corresponding ssl releases are 10.2 through versions preceding 11.2.12.11, 11.6.0.4, and 11.7.4.
