CVE-2026-59251 is an uncontrolled resource-allocation flaw in Erlang/OTP public_key certificate-path validation. During RFC 5280 certificate-policy processing performed by public_key:pkix_path_validation/3, policy-tree expansion is not bounded. A certificate chain containing M policies per certificate across K certificates can cause approximately M^K policy-tree nodes to be created. The resulting processing can pin BEAM schedulers and exhaust VM memory. Affected releases include OTP 26.2 through versions preceding the applicable fixes in OTP 27.3.4.15, 28.5.0.4, and 29.0.4; corresponding affected public_key releases begin at 1.15 and precede 1.17.1.5, 1.20.3.4, or 1.21.4, respectively.
