CVE-2026-59873 is a denial-of-service vulnerability in node-tar, a tar archive manipulation library for Node.js. Versions prior to 7.5.19 do not enforce hard upper bounds on total decompressed output, entry counts, or decompression ratio during archive extraction and parsing, including code paths such as src/extract.ts. As a result, a small crafted gzipped tar archive can trigger unbounded expansion during processing. The flaw stems from resource consumption controls that were insufficient to limit cumulative decompressed data relative to compressed input, allowing gzip bomb-style archives to drive excessive parsing and extraction work. The issue is fixed in version 7.5.19, which adds compressed-versus-decompressed byte tracking and aborts processing when the decompression ratio exceeds the configured threshold.
