CVE-2026-61979 is an unauthenticated authentication bypass and privilege escalation vulnerability in the miniOrange SAML 2.0 Single Sign On plugin family for WordPress. The flaw is caused by signature algorithm confusion during SAML response validation: the plugin accepts the signature algorithm declared in an incoming SAML response instead of strictly enforcing the algorithm configured for the trusted identity provider. In the vulnerable code path, an attacker can select an HMAC-based algorithm such as HMAC-SHA1 and cause the plugin to treat the identity provider’s RSA public key as if it were a shared HMAC secret. Because that public key is not secret, an attacker can forge a SAML assertion for an arbitrary existing WordPress account and have the plugin accept the signature as valid. The issue has been described as affecting the free edition through 5.4.3, with broader reporting indicating analogous impact across multiple separately versioned commercial editions until their respective fixes.
