Apache Syncope Groovy Sandbox Bypass RCE
CVE-2026-63071 is an improper isolation or compartmentalization vulnerability in Apache Syncope, affecting the syncope-core-spring component in versions 3.0.0-M0 through 3.0.16, 4.0.0-M0 through 4.0.6, and 4.1.0-M0 through 4.1.1. The flaw allows an administrator with sufficient entitlements for Implementations to create a malicious Groovy class containing untrusted code that escapes the intended Groovy security sandbox. By bypassing this sandbox boundary, attacker-controlled Groovy code can execute outside the expected restrictions, leading to post-authentication remote code execution within the Syncope application context.
What it means and what to do now: patch path, interim mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.
What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.
Successful exploitation breaks the intended isolation enforced by the Groovy sandbox and enables execution of untrusted attacker-supplied code in the context of the Apache Syncope application. This can result in arbitrary code execution, compromise of application integrity, unauthorized access to data available to the application, abuse of connected identity-management functionality, and potential follow-on actions depending on the privileges of the running service and deployment architecture.
If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.
Restrict and review administrator roles and entitlements, especially permissions related to Implementations, to minimize the number of users able to define or modify Groovy-based logic. Until upgrades are completed, limit access to administrative functionality that permits creation of Groovy implementations, closely audit such changes, and review deployment controls to reduce the impact of application-level code execution.
Patch, then assume compromise.
Upgrade Apache Syncope to version 4.0.7 or 4.1.2, which fix the vulnerability by tightening the Groovy security sandbox. Affected deployments on vulnerable 3.0.x releases should migrate to a fixed supported release, as the available fix versions identified are 4.0.7 and 4.1.2.
