CVE-2026-63076 is a NULL/invalid pointer dereference in OpenSSL Certificate Management Protocol (CMP) password-based MAC (PBM) protection verification. During verification, OpenSSL obtains the protectionAlg parameter and its ASN.1 type, but checks only that the returned value pointer is non-NULL before casting it as the expected PBMParameter structure. It does not validate that the ASN.1 type is appropriate. A crafted CMP message carrying a protectionAlg parameter of a different ASN.1 type can therefore cause OpenSSL to dereference an invalid pointer. The flaw affects OpenSSL 3.0, 3.4, 3.5, 3.6, and 4.0 branches; OpenSSL 1.1.1 and 1.0.2 are not affected. CMP functionality must be explicitly enabled by the application. The vulnerable code is outside the OpenSSL FIPS module boundary.
