CVE-2026-64061 is a use-after-free vulnerability in the Linux kernel netfs helper library, specifically in netfs_read_gaps(). The flaw is caused by releasing the sink folio too early while it is still referenced by an ITER_BVEC-class iterator used to service reads with gaps at either end of a target folio. In this code path, the iterator tiles the sink folio over the middle region so that a single read operation can populate both gaps. If the sink folio is put before the read request has fully completed, subsequent data reception and iterator copy operations can dereference freed memory, resulting in a kernel-space use-after-free. The issue was observed by KASAN during xfstest generic/075 in a CIFS receive path, where socket-delivered data was copied into the iterator after the backing folio had already been freed. The vulnerable netfs code is shared by multiple network filesystems, including SMB/CIFS, 9p, Ceph, and AFS.
