CVE-2026-64644 is a denial-of-service vulnerability in Next.js affecting versions 15.5.0 through 15.5.20 and 16.0.0 through 16.2.10. The issue occurs in self-hosted deployments that use the default image loader and have remote image optimization enabled through configured remote image patterns. Under these conditions, the Image Optimization API can fetch and process remotely hosted images. If an attacker supplies a malicious image, including crafted SVG content, processing can trigger excessive CPU consumption in the image optimization path exposed through the framework’s image endpoint. The vulnerability is limited to configurations using configured remote image patterns and does not affect deployments that disable optimization, use a custom image loader, or run on Vercel-hosted infrastructure.
