CVE-2026-6475 is a path traversal and symlink-following vulnerability in PostgreSQL's pg_basebackup when used in plain format and in pg_rewind. The affected utilities failed to properly validate output file paths read from their input, including unsafe paths involving symbolic links, absolute paths, or parent-directory references. As a result, a malicious source controlled by an origin superuser can cause these tools to overwrite arbitrary local files writable by the operating system account running the utility. This can be used to place attacker-controlled content into startup or profile files and thereby hijack the local PostgreSQL operating system account. Affected versions are PostgreSQL before 18.4, 17.10, 16.14, 15.18, and 14.23.
