CVE-2026-6479 is a denial-of-service vulnerability in PostgreSQL connection startup handling. The flaw is caused by uncontrolled recursion during SSL and GSS negotiation while processing startup packets. A malicious client can repeatedly alternate rejected SSL and GSS encryption requests, causing the startup handler to re-enter recursively until the backend process exhausts stack space and crashes. The issue affects PostgreSQL versions before 18.4, 17.10, 16.14, 15.18, and 14.23. The vulnerable logic is associated with startup packet processing in the backend connection path, including ProcessStartupPacket() as described in supporting technical analysis.
