CVE-2026-66402 is a certificate identity validation vulnerability in FreeRDP before 3.29.0, affecting versions up to and including 3.28.0. The flaw is present in the certificate verification and hostname processing logic in tls_verify_certificate(), tls_match_hostname(), and x509_utils_get_dns_names(). FreeRDP performs custom Common Name and DNS Subject Alternative Name matching instead of relying on OpenSSL length-aware identity validation APIs. As a result, DNS SAN values containing embedded NUL bytes can be truncated during comparison, a matching Common Name can be accepted even when DNS SAN entries are present but do not match, and IP-literal targets can be validated through DNS or Common Name matching without checking iPAddress SAN entries. These weaknesses allow improper acceptance of attacker-controlled certificates under certain conditions, undermining TLS server identity verification.
