CVE-2026-66484 is a path traversal vulnerability in GNU cpio affecting tar archive extraction in copy-in mode when the --no-absolute-filenames option is used. During extraction, GNU cpio normalizes the extracted file name, but does not apply equivalent sanitization to the tar hard-link target before passing it to the link_to_name function and ultimately invoking the link system call. As a result, a crafted tar archive containing a hard-link entry whose link target is an absolute path outside the extraction directory can bypass the expected restriction enforced by --no-absolute-filenames. This allows archive-controlled creation of a hard link that references an existing file outside the intended extraction directory.
