CVE-2026-6687 is a stack-based buffer overflow in FatFs R0.16 and earlier affecting exFAT volume label handling in f_getlabel(). The flaw occurs because the implementation trusts the exFAT label length field (XDIR_NumLabel) without enforcing the specification's maximum label length, allowing oversized label data to be written into a small or caller-provided label buffer. The issue is triggered when FatFs parses a crafted exFAT filesystem image containing an overlong volume-label entry. This results in memory corruption on the stack and provides a clean corruption primitive in embedded environments that commonly consume untrusted removable media or mounted update images.
