CVE-2026-6688 affects FatFs R0.16 and earlier when long filename (LFN) support is enabled. In this configuration, the filename field returned to callers, fno.fname, can contain names up to 255 characters. Many downstream integrations and wrapper layers incorrectly assume a much shorter maximum length and copy fno.fname into fixed-size buffers using unbounded operations such as strcpy or sprintf. This creates a downstream-caller buffer overflow pattern rather than a single isolated overflow in a specific FatFs function. The issue is therefore rooted in how FatFs long filename output is consumed by surrounding application code, although the content notes FatFs could improve truncation signaling to reduce misuse.
