CVE-2026-66897 is a critical path traversal vulnerability in Canonical LXD instance template processing. Template target paths supplied in image metadata are checked relative to a confined directory handle, but the subsequent file creation uses an unconstrained string path. This validation-to-use mismatch permits crafted template paths to escape the intended confinement and cause LXD, running with host root privileges, to create or overwrite files outside the designated template directory.
