CVE-2026-85501, also called ReTrap, affects NLnet Labs Unbound through version 1.26.0. Malicious DNS zones or crafted DNS responses can induce excessive DNSSEC-validation work, degrading resolver availability. The issue encompasses TagTrap, in which numerous mismatched DNSKEY, RRSIG, and DS records stress Zone/Algorithm/KeyTag matching; DelegationTrap, in which deeply nested delegations impose expensive iterative DNSKEY and DS chain-of-trust validation; NsecTrap, in which excessive invalid NSEC records require repeated validation; and AdditionalTrap, in which DNSSEC validation of records in the ADDITIONAL section consumes validation resources.
