CVE-2026-86414 is a credential-disclosure vulnerability in curl and libcurl versions 7.10.8 through 8.22.0. During HTTP proxy CONNECT tunnel establishment, a malicious proxy can return HTTP 401 with a WWW-Authenticate header instead of the expected HTTP 407 with Proxy-Authenticate. libcurl can incorrectly process this as an origin-server authentication challenge and send the origin's credentials to the proxy. Exposed authentication material can include Basic authentication passwords or Negotiate/Kerberos tickets. The vulnerability is fixed in curl 8.23.0.

A credential-disclosure vulnerability in libcurl allows an HTTP proxy to obtain origin-server authentication credentials by returning an origin-authentication challenge to a CONNECT request. Exposed credentials can include a Basic authentication password or a Negotiate/Kerberos ticket. The advisory rates it Medium with CVSS 3.1 score 6.5 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N). Fixes are pending for the listed Amazon Linux curl packages; upstream patch availability is not stated.
Referenced by an Ubuntu local security check covering curl packages. No individual technical description or vulnerability-specific exploit availability is provided.
An HTTP proxy can use an unexpected authentication challenge in response to CONNECT to trick libcurl into disclosing credentials to the proxy.
A critical vulnerability affecting curl and related packages. The advisory assigns a CVSS v3 score of 9.8, indicating network exploitation without authentication or user interaction and high confidentiality, integrity, and availability impacts. The underlying technical flaw is not described. A security update is available, and the advisory reports no known exploits.
